USACE Far East District Promotes STEAM Education at Humphreys High School

On November 7, 2024, Humphreys High School in South Korea hosted a significant event. The event was part of its ongoing collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Far East District (USACE FED).

The event, dubbed “The STEAM Source” speaker series, brought together five engineers from USACE FED. The engineers aimed to engage with students about the practical applications of engineering in their everyday surroundings. By highlighting the role of engineering in the construction and maintenance of their school and community, the engineers provided a tangible connection between classroom learning and real-world applications.

This initiative is part of USACE FED’s 12-year partnership with the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) schools. The partnership is aimed at fostering interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) among students.

The engineers shared their diverse experiences and career paths. They also emphasized the broad spectrum of opportunities available within the engineering field. The event also underscored the importance of outreach programs in raising awareness about USACE and its mission, as well as inspiring the next generation of engineers.

Engaging Students with Real-World Engineering

The event featured a variety of speakers, each bringing their unique perspective and expertise to the table. Among them were:

  • Daniel Carlson, Fire Protection Engineer
  • Casey Chu, Civil Engineer
  • Jamie Hagio, Chief of Construction
  • Rachel Napolitan, Chief of Public Affairs
  • Siranon Shoomee, Electrical Engineer

These professionals discussed their career journeys, the challenges they faced, and the rewards of working in their respective fields. They also highlighted the importance of engineering in everyday life, from the construction of buildings to the development of infrastructure. By sharing their stories, the engineers aimed to demystify the profession and demonstrate its accessibility and relevance to the students.

The Importance of STEAM Education

STEAM education, which integrates the arts into the traditional STEM framework, is designed to foster both convergent and divergent thinking. This approach encourages students to apply creative and analytical skills to solve real-world problems, creating a more holistic educational experience. Studies have shown that STEAM education can enhance creativity and innovation, skills that are increasingly valuable in today’s rapidly evolving job market.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were over 10.7 million STEM occupations in 2023. Projections indicate an increase to nearly 11.8 million by 2033. This growth underscores the importance of preparing students for careers in these fields.

Events like “The STEAM Source” speaker series play a crucial role in this preparation. They provide students with insights into the diverse opportunities available in engineering and related disciplines.

Pathways to Engineering Careers

One of the key messages conveyed during the event was the variety of pathways available to students interested in pursuing careers in engineering. USACE FED offers several programs designed to support aspiring engineers, including:

  • Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program
  • Department of Army Fellows Program
  • Pathways Internship Program

These programs provide valuable hands-on experience and technical knowledge. They help students transition from academia to professional roles within USACE.

For instance, Siranon Shoomee and Casey Chu both participated in the Department of Army Fellows Program. The program offers a structured career path and mentorship opportunities. Shoomee, who joined USACE as a recent college graduate, emphasized the importance of mentorship in her career development and the benefits of starting her career with the Construction Branch.

Opportunities Beyond Engineering

While the focus of the event was on engineering, the speakers also highlighted the wide range of career opportunities available within USACE. Rachel Napolitan, Chief of Public Affairs, pointed out that the organization offers roles in communication, political science, computer science, and more. This diversity ensures that students with varying interests and skills can find fulfilling careers within USACE.

Moreover, USACE provides numerous opportunities for travel and professional growth. Engineers and other professionals can work in various locations worldwide, including South Korea, Guam, Japan, the U.S., Greenland, Hawaii, Togo, Germany, and Jordan. This global presence allows employees to gain diverse experiences and develop a broad skill set, enhancing their career prospects.

Conclusion: Inspiring the Next Generation

The “STEAM Source” speaker series at Humphreys High School was a resounding success. It provided students with valuable insights into the field of engineering and the many opportunities available within USACE.

By engaging with professionals and learning about their experiences, students gained a better understanding of the practical applications of their studies. They also learned about the potential career paths they can pursue.

Events like this are crucial in inspiring the next generation of engineers. They also ensure that students are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
